Amable

Ableton MCP, without the setup

You want to tell an AI what to do in Ableton Live and have it happen in your session. There are two ways to get there today: wire an MCP server to a chat app yourself, or install Amable, a Mac app made for Live 12.

What "Ableton MCP" means

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI apps such as Claude Desktop or Cursor call tools on your computer. Community projects like ahujasid/ableton-mcp turn Ableton Live into such a tool: a Remote Script inside Live receives commands, and an MCP server passes them on from your AI app.

The do-it-yourself route

Going by the original project's quickstart, the setup is:

  1. Install uv, the Python package manager (the project needs Python 3.8 or newer).
  2. Point your MCP client at the server: an entry in Claude Desktop's claude_desktop_config.json, or a command in Cursor's MCP settings.
  3. Install the project's Remote Script into Live, then pick it in Live's Settings → Link, Tempo & MIDI → Control Surface.

Then you chat in your AI app, beside Live. It is free and open source, and if you like building your own tools, it's a good way in.

The Amable route

  1. Download Amable for Mac and open it. It installs its own connection to Live (a standard Control Surface).
  2. Open your set in Ableton Live 12.
  3. Type what you want.

There is no Python, no config file and no separate chat app. Its tools are built for Live 12: it reads your set's real state before acting, writes MIDI into clips, loads instruments, and asks before it deletes a track, scene, clip or device. Each Live Set keeps its own conversations, and it replies in the language you write in.
